I thought that I might add a trip log on here of my
trips. Not that anyone else would want to read, but every other log I have
tried to use on others sites tends to get cleaned off. So if I clean it
off this site it is my own fault!!!
TNT trip to
Texoma on 3-4-06

It was
great to finally go fishing this year, lol. Cant believe I held out this long.
My wife had asked me about a year ago if there was anywhere I wanted to go on a
guided trip where would it be, that was easy Texoma of course. With that answer
it made the next ? even easier, guide =JD . I had told her I wanted to take my
grandfather and uncle out sometime on a trip to repay them for getting me into
fishing. With that said she surprised me about a month ago and said it was all
set, that I needed to set up at time with JD. Fella's I am the luckiest guy out
there, a beautiful wife that cooks, cleans, clear coats slabs better than me,
has a great job, then gets me a trip with JD.
With all that being said I have been under the weather for about a week and got
really bad the day before and was wondering if I would even really make it. When
asked if I was going, as long as I can walk I can make it. Amazing what texoma
can do for you, started feeling better just being on the water. The fishing
turned out to be pretty tough. I think we managed around a dozen stripers most
were fat and healthy, not monsters but nice fish. As JD might say we fished
XDfdvnek&$ and then dfse984r3mdf. Let me just say he covered and awful lot of
water to get us the fish we caught. Needless to say every spot he took us held
an awful lot of fish. The fish finder stayed full most of the day. I think the
fish just took the day off. The fish bit really light and the birds never helped
us a bit. I think just about all fish came on ReAxtion baits by Axman himself.
It was the first time going to Texoma that I did not tie on a slab. I really
wanted to get a chance to learn fishing with sassy shad, etc. To tell you the
truth I have used sassy's very little in my fishing. JD was great in answering
any questions on seasonal patterns and basically anything else we wanted to
know. It was also good covering quite a bit of water to get to know the places I
have read about but never fished. Last but not least, good seeing Mark Macnamara
and meeting Mike Haddock out on the water. JD thanks for working hard on a tough
day out there, there will be another time down the road and maybe then we will
sackem'up!

Me and my
uncle decided to go up to lake altus and walk the rocks at dusk this evening.
Fish hit us at 630pm, 2 walleye looked to be 16 in males. Hit shallow running
rapalas, tried sassy's, curly tails and did get a couple hits. We were on the
east shoreline straight across from the boat ramp by the main beach. Fished
between those orange poles. We didnt have any miners lights or anything close so just went
till dark.
Trip with Van!
Wow.........I havent been fishing in months and made it
two days in a row. not suRe how the weather was wherever you were today but here
THE WIND BLEW.
driving down to the lake I wasnt even sure we would get to fish.....We got on
the water around 4:00 and started throwing some of the rocky banks that were
protected from the worst of the wind......this didnt produce but one sandbass.
We then worked our way back to the very rough and very windy southern part of
the lake and picked up a couple more fish..and our only hybrid of the day. Did I
mention it was windy?.........We set up drifts that would let us work towards
the dike.....we had a feeling the fish would be there. We set up alot of drifts
really, with the wind moving us at a rate we may have been able to troll at. We
managed to steadily pick up some nice fat sandies, but it never really turned on
and the fish were not schooled up at all.
The highlite of the day was maybe also the low point of the day. I hooked up a
fish about 6:00 that I though was just another 2 or 3 lbs'er.....right up until
we started to get it up closer to the boat......it never really fought hard or
fast.......just held tight to the bottom like a walleye will sometimes. I got
here up near the side of the boat and Bryon started to think it was bigger than
I estimated.......he could see her length......he grabs a net and I keep some
pressure on her, she never did strip drag...........just held tight to the
bottom. After a short time she starts to come up, about 2 foot from the reach of
the net she comes completely to the top and we see I have a MONSTER
walleye........then she make a nice slow roll away from us and she is gone...I
almost cried. Not sure we could have done anything different, but it would have
been nice to have a picture of her. She was at aleast 30 inches long and
fat........Bryon sent me a picture of the current state record and we wonder how
close she would have been. We at first guessed her an easy 10 lbs.....who knows
if she would have been more, she was full of eggs and fat. At least we got to
see her........she was a pretty fish.
Oh ya.........I think all our fish came on rattle traps today.....we threw sassy
shads but dont think any of the fish came on them..
We tried to do a little bank fishing from the rocks this evening.........that
was a bad idea......and gave that up pretty quick. The wind picked up even more
and made casting an almost impossible task.
Van
Got on
the lake about 730am , windy windy windy. I knew it when I went. My uncle was
in from out of town, he doesn't like the suggestion of not going at all. Marked some a few
fish on the drop offs in 12-13 ft. Water temp was down to 47 degrees. Never
got a bite on the day. Found lots and lots of fish in 27-32 ft of water of main
lake points. Unable to fish them slow enough with the wind. Wasted some gas on
the trip, but it was nice to see the water temp and see where the fish were at
although we couldn't catch them. I was back home by 930am on my recliner
getting ready for nascar.

Here is a
few reports for Altus the past few days keep in mind these aren't all my reports
but from relatives as well.
Friday 8-2pm my uncle and grandfather fished from the bank just north of the dam
on the point right off the wall of the dam. They fished with minnows and jigs.
They managed around 30 fish, fat sand bass, crappie and a few walleyes. Most
were on minnows and a few on curly tails.
Sat, being as windy as I knew it would be I chose to hit the same point again
with my uncle. We fished from 730 till 1 pm. We managed around 40 on minnows
and curly tails. These fish were some of the biggest sand bass I have EVER seen
come out of this lake. ( Van and I discussed these sand bass a few weeks ago
and they are healthy, and I cant wait for the slab bite this year. These sand
bass are in the full blown spawn at least my thought is that they are. We
caught and released many large females. Few small hybrids as well.
Sunday, I went again with my uncle this time in the boat, water temps from 64-66
on the lake. Again around 40, we missed probably another 40,lol. All fish on
rattle traps and curly tails. Any where you find shallow rocks we caught fish.
Didn't appear to be not one female caught on this day, sand bass that is. All
were still nice right on the bank. Most fish caught on green curly tails and
rattle traps. Not one hybrid, quite a few crappie and one 3lb large mouth.
East of the boat ramp on the rocks between poles was best.
Monday, My uncle went out today front the bank again. Fished between the poles
again. Said he hit over 100 in 3 hours. Fish almost every cast. He said the
fish were tearing up the curly tails. About 1 dozen large crappie as well.
Between orange poles.
We didn't really tear them up, but it was good solid fishing. No big fish
though.
I went
out on Monday 24 April from 5:30 pm till around 8:15pm. Caught about 30 I cast
curly tails and caught a couple on rocks around hicks and the orange poles on
the dike. I was trying to cash in on the front blowing in. Did some slabbing on
the old road bed south side of lake you know by the exposed hump. I managed
about 7-8 slabbing 1oz bait, tried smaller baits as well but the wind was
hindering keeping it down. But they were nailing it when they bit it. Finished
up my night trolling shad raps and rattletraps on north shore area where it was
windy as heck. Caught many small walleye, couple small hybrids and a couple
monster sandies and nice crappie. Trolling accounted for most, but I would much
rather slab them when possible. Water temp was up to 71 degrees. I was glad to
get my first slab biting fish, and they were WACKING it hard which is what I
love. Just couldn't find any bunched up, but they were scattered along the road
bed nicely.
Memorial Day Weekend 2006
It was great to get back on the
water after having been sidelined for a couple weeks.
Well last year over Memorial Day weekend my brother and I hammered some nice
hybrids from Lake Altus,OK. Well this Memorial Day weekend we held our family
reunion and it was another great day in a Special way. Was lucky enough to get
lots of kids involved. Never found the hybrids although we did look for them
from time to time.
Well I thought the weekend would be a breeze. Went out Friday evening with my
brother and uncle we caught about 50 fish easy, good mix of hybrids, sandies,
crappie and walleye. Well Saturday, Sunday and Monday were a bit tougher with
the kiddos as the wind was a major factor, forced us out of my honey hole from
the night before. The kids hung in great. We fished every day and all caught
fish, we didn't hammer them, but from their stories when we would go back in you
couldnt tell . All trips combined from Friday-Monday Night would total close to
150 fish. A good mix of sand bass, hybrids, walleye(lots of small ones),
crappie. I learned pretty quick it can be tough to keep them interested if your
not keeping the fish coming in the boat. We set up short drifts and would get a
couple just about every drift. Caught fish in 6-16ft of water. Caught fish on
many different slab baits. The fish were not hitting the slabs real hard just
pecking at them before taking them. Hopefully this will also pick up soon.
Water temp 77 degrees.

Well it
wasnt the huge hybrid I had been hopeful of here of late. The fishing was good
for us this past Saturday. We looked hard for the fish early in the morning.
Nothing on the usual spots could not buy any bites. Then just started looking
shallow water like 6inches to 2 foot, and found the hybrids and sandbass. We
managed over 130 of them no big ones, they were filling up on ghost minnows on
top, they would hit about anything we threw at them. When the sun came out from
the clouds the went deeper and we kept on catching them on slabs. Then about
noon we went back to my favorite hump, with a little bump bump and bam. It was
on, about 10 seconds into the fight I was grabbing the net and handing it to my
uncle. After a bit when I got the fish up I realized the net wasnt really big
enough but it all worked out. The fish came on a TNT Limit Gitter slab. I have
caught several nice blues on slabs, who needs live bait, lol.
Water temps were 78 degrees.
Fishing
was a lot tougher today. I will blame it on blue skys, little to no wind out of
the east after the front. It can never be my fault
.
We managed about 15 today most all on slabs or trolling. The fish were caught
from 6 ft to 15 ft. Looked at all the usual spots the fish were not to be found
on top this morning. Water temp around 78.
It is getting closer to time
for me to put all other tackle up except for top water baits and none other than
the TNT line of slabs! I generally start slabbing in middle to end of May
and use them the rest of the year.
